March illustrated almanac
marching on
This is an illustrated digital almanac of the internal emotional climate, as influenced by the external natural and astronomical events. I wanted to capture visually the shared experience of how it feels to be alive as a tiny human, enveloped in the greater cyclical movement of this planet, throughout one calendar year. Welcome to March!
Spring equinox
On the March equinox, the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere receive roughly equal amounts of sunlight; neither hemisphere is tilted more toward or away from the Sun than the other. It marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.
Beginning of the year.
“March” is named for the Roman god of war, Mars. This was the time of year to resume military campaigns that had been interrupted by winter, which is the reason why January and February weren’t included in the early Roman calendar. March was the first month of the calendar year and it marked a new beginning, which makes a lot of sense with the start of spring too.
The full moon
The first full moon after spring equinox is called Paschal Full Moon (Pascha= passover) and it also determines the date of Easter, which falls on the first Sunday after the full moon.
The zodiac sun is in Pisces
Pisces is symbolised by two fish swimming in opposite directions, representing the constant division of attention between fantasy and reality. Pisces are a mutable water sign - highly emotional, adaptable to their environment and in tune with the collective unconscious.
Pisces is rules by Neptune
Pisces is ruled by Neptune, the celestial body that governs creativity and dreams. Neptunian energy is mysterious, spiritual and emotional. It is said that discerning fact from fiction is not Neptune’s strong suit, so its energy should be channelled into art not contract.
